The intellectual brain is the part of the brain that is able to put information together to rationalise or solve problems. It is the part that is more highly evolved and when we work from the intellectual brain we are in a positive mode and in control. When working from this part of the brain we will always come up with well thought out solutions to problems as it deals with information in a positive manner without emotional input.
The primitive brain, also referred to as the emotional brain is the fear centre and works in a negative mode. It is there to protect us from danger and ensure our survival.
It’s vigilant and obsessive. It is as its name suggests the most primitive part of the brain and was the first part to evolve.
It comprises of three parts, one part registers sensory information and passes it on to another part where numerous templates or files are stored with information gathered about dangerous or life threatening information, and the third part stimulates the release of chemicals that cause us to take action to protect ourselves. When danger is anticipated it will take control away from the intellectual mind and set about ensuring our safety. When it takes control away the resultant behaviour is, either depression, anger or anxiety or a combination of these.
When startled, we enter into what’s known as the negative matrix, sensory information is sent to the primitive brain which checks the filing system to see if the situation is dangerous, then if so, the third part stimulates the release of chemicals that send us into fight or flight mode. All this happens before we consciously become aware of the situation, meanwhile the information is also being sent to the intellectual brain via the thalamus and all the sensory information is put together and assessed rationally. If it’s a genuine threat, avoidance is initiated, if not the intellectual mind shuts down the response.
The primitive mind has a negative disposition, it’s here that negative thoughts arise and when they do it’s very easy for the negativity to snowball and before you know it all is doom and gloom. One negative thought promotes another. Also negative introspection and forecasting arise from here. It is a powerful mind and can cause the intellectual mind to lose control. When our anxiety levels rise, then intellectual control is lost and the primitive mind takes over but as anxiety decreases the intellectual mind regains control. The more we think positively the stronger the reign of the intellectual mind and the less negativity is produced. More positive thoughts lead to a stronger intellectual mind and the more control we have over our lives.
....the Positive way Forward...
